If you are interested in supermodels, I am sure you've heard about the tragic story of Gia Carangi.
Gia it's CONSIDERED the first supermodel she was known because of her rebellious behavior and drug addiction that took her till death.
She had a tragic childhood marked by drugs and the divorce of her parents. In her teenage years, Gia was very masculine and had a strong personality. Most of her friends were boys.
Her mother didn't like this behavior, so she proposed her to get into the modeling industry. She rejected the idea a lot of times. When she finally accepted to make a photo shoot with her mother's friend, everybody was impressed by Gia's potential in modeling. This pictures came in to the hands of Wilhelmina Cooper a former model and owner of Wilhelmina models: One of the most prestigious modeling agencies in the world. When she contacted with Gia to offer her a contract, she noticed that she was too short to be a runway model; But her strong personality got her captivated, at the point where she became Gia's friend.
Gia became successful and well known around the fashion industry, she worked with photographers like Francesco Scavullo, and her face was in the ads of Christian Dior , Perry Ellis, Calvin Klein and Versace. Her success got her into drugs. She went to times to rehabilitation. when her mentor Wilhelmina Cooper died. Gia was devastated, and she started to get high doses of heroin .
People says that the marks were so notable that they had to cover them with makeup to make the photo shoots. She took an "ugly" appearance, and "diva" behavior. Nobody wanted to work with her.
Desperate Gia, began to prostitute herself to get money for drugs. She got AIDS. And died in November 18, 1986. Her last wish was to tell people her story and the danger of drugs.
She created a foundation to eliminate abuse and search about AIDS and HIV. She also has a movie.
